THE VISIT

Collect your miners' tokens at reception before starting on your journey of discovery.

On the first floor you will learn how coal was formed in the Jurassic times and how it was mined through the ages to the modern day open cast pits.

Then onto the second floor to the 'Race Apart' exhibition where you will find out how the miners and their families lived, worked and played.

After a short film you will hand in your tokens and be taken on the 'Magic Helmet' tour of the pithead, simulated coal road, coal face and see the biggest working winding engine in Scotland. All our guides are ex-miners and all have their own story to tell of how working underground affected them and their families.

You can also visit our Operations Centre and build a bridge, create electricity, displace water and learn lots more about friction, levers, gauges etc.

We have a licensed coffee shop, gift shop, picnic area and play area with all the old fashioned games from a by gone era.

How To Find Us The Scottish Mining Museum is at Newtongrange, just nine miles south of Edinburgh on the A7.
By Car From the eastern end of the Edinburgh city by-pass (at Sheriffhall Roundabout), follow the signs for Newtongrange and the museum for approximately three miles. From the south, follow the A7 north from Galashiels.

There is plenty of free parking for cars and coaches.
